Why should I join a Premium Franchise League?

Franchise Football is more than just Fantasy Football team management. You must manage the finances, the players and the coaching staff of your Franchise carefully to survive the challenges of a successful season. It may take several years to build your Franchise into one worthy of a championship.

A Franchise League offers a different challenge level than most yearly draft leagues. You can't drop your injured stud player, because another Franchise may sign him to a long term contract for next year. The rookie that you draft this year may sit on your bench all season and may not develop into the next stud until next year. The roster moves you make now can effect your roster potential for next year.

Typically, a Franchise owner is in the game for the long term challenge. You will compete against the same Franchise owners year after year and will hopefully get to know your competition; learn their tendencies, build rivalries, and find trading partners.

How is Franchise Football different from Fantasy Football?

A fantasy football draft is usually a serpentine draft with each team taking turns. In Franchise Football, everyone can bid on each available free agent and could easily get multiple top Free Agents to join his Franchise.

In fantasy football you are normally charged extra for roster changes but you can make as many roster moves as you like. In Franchise Football there is no additional charge, but you will need to manage the funds of the organization to account for the budget of your replacement players.

Fantasy football players are all thrown back into the draft for next year, in Franchise Football you can build a team by retaining a few of your best players as a foundation for the next season.

The fantasy football season typically ends after week 16 or 17 of the NFL season. Franchise Football trades often occur during the off-season. If one Franchise owns more top players than they can retain under contract, they can trade away this excess talent for an improved rookie draft pick or for Franchise Funds.

What happens if my league isn't filled?

We will do our best to fill all of the leagues before the drafts. The auction draft starts early, at the beginning of August, so many people aren't thinking about the football season yet. If leagues aren't full, the following steps will be taken:

  1. The start of the Auction draft (about August 1st) will be delayed.

  2. E-mails will be sent to existing members asking for help to recruit their friends.

  3. Additional recruiting efforts at other Fantasy Football sites will be initiated.

  4. If the league is short one Franchise, the Franchise Football commissioner may take control of the remaining team.

  5. As a last resort, a non-filled league may be disbanded and asked to move their Franchise into another non-filled league.

What can I do if I can't make the draft?

The rookie draft is during the last week of the pre-season. Each Franchise will have 12 hours to make their pick. If you can't participate in this draft, you can do several things:

  1. You can pre-draft your picks and make selections ahead of the draft. I recommend entering enough optional picks to cover the possibility that all of your selections have been chosen by another Franchise.

  2. Find a public internet access location. Most libraries offer free internet access for a limit time. Check in periodically as your pick approaches.

  3. You can have a trusted friend monitor the draft and make the selection for your team.

  4. As a last resort, you can e-mail Franchise Football with a list of preferences, and we'll make your selection when your time expires.

What is an Orphan Team?

Whenever a Franchise owner opts out of a league, his team becomes an orphan. You can adopt an orphan Franchise and pick up where the previous owner left off. You inherit the player contracts, the draft picks and the additional funds for his losses from the previous year. Often a new owner is just what the Franchise needs to become successful.

Every team has potential, if it's not with the players under existing contracts, it is often with the rookie players. A poor team will have a high draft in each round of the upcoming two round rookie draft and will be granted additional funds to spend for free agency. Various league parity rules are directed at balancing the potential of each Franchise.

How do I re-build my Franchise?

Sometimes a team just can't win! Don't panic—even the worst teams have potential to build a Franchise around. There are several things you can do.

Each Franchise is given $400,000 for each loss from the previous year, so a Franchise with less talent will have more funding available to offer free agents as a signing bonus.

The Rookie Draft gives you an opportunity to add the young players that will be the future of the NFL. Your draft position is based on the Franchise record from the previous year, the worst team will draft first.  You can also extend one of your rookies for a second year.

Every week the NFL suffers season ending injuries, watch the free agent market carefully and sign the next NFL starter to your team.

One tip for a re-building Franchise is to sign your top players to an extended contract before the end of the year, with the current year's extra funding. Your un-spent funds do not carry over to next year, so you can get a head start on your contracts for next year.

Your first priority should be to find a starting QB, a top ranked Quarterback will typically score the most points. Second in importance is a top RB and then a good WR core. A coach, TE, PK, and a Defensive Player will all contribute about the same, but finding a good head coach can be rare.

Why don't my Franchise funds carry over to next year?

Many funds really do carry over. Although you must spend what you have each year, you can invest up to $14.75M in salary contracts for next year. This, coupled with the bonus for losses incurred, can be a tremendous advantage going into the following year, giving a Franchise considerably more funds than another to bid for the Free Agent signing bonus. I have found that if all funds carry over from year to year, some owners will prefer to keep the majority of their available money, which eventually becomes so large that league parity cannot be maintained.

How do Player Contracts work?

You can keep 2 player for up to 2 years, and 2 others for up to 3 years.  You can extend any player into a longer contract, but never into a shorter one. You can move a 1 year player into a 2 year contract at the beginning of your second year. Then at the beginning of year 3, you can move that same player into a 3 year contract, and keep him one addition year. You must have a 3 year contract available, which means you could be forced into cutting a 3 year guy, or moving him up to your Franchise spot and cutting your old Franchise player.

You must assign these contracts before the Free Agency period, (auction draft).  You can do this at the beginning of a new season, with that year's $55M budget, or you can do it at the end of the current year, if you still have money left over.

You can cut a player on contract any time you want.  Any cut player goes to the weekly Free Agent blind bid draft first.  A player cut during the off-season goes to the Free Agent auction. That means that everybody will get a chance to bid on him.  You can re-sign him if you have high bid, and he will be a 1 year player again.

How does the Signing Bonus work?

Signing bonus is a one time payment to a player to entice him to join your team. If you get say, Tomlinson for $7M during the auction bidding, all but $400,000 of that $7M is signing bonus. A standard 1 year contract is built into the auction bid to simplify the process.  If you want to make him your Franchise player, you will then need to upgrade his 1 year contract to a Franchise contract, which will cost your Franchise an additional $5M. You will be credited the $400,000 1 year contract value. The player only gets a signing bonus one time. Next year, it will only cost you the $5M Franchise contract to keep him.

Certainly! Franchise Football will be happy to be the commissioner of your league. All leagues will have the exact same format as Franchise Football and all costs and payoffs will also be identical.
